The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an examination administered by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB–GATE). It is an all India examination that tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and technology. GATE scores are used for admissions to post–graduate programs (e.g. Master of Engineering (ME), Master of Technology (MTech), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)) in Indian higher education institutes, with financial assistance provided by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and other government agencies. GATE scores are also used by some Indian public sector undertakings (PSUs) for recruiting graduate engineers in entry–level positions.
